What does the road to electrification look like for transport refrigeration units (TRUs)?

Heavy Duty Trucking Equipment Editor Jim Park sat down with Paul Kroes from Thermo King to discuss what the path to electrifying TRUs looks like for fleets.

What are some of the topics they discuss? Charging architecture and battery cost and TRU electric payback.

Regarding charging architecture, there is a debate around placing the burden of power conversion on the TRU or the stationary infrastructure. Assuming the BETRU has a High Voltage DC (HVDC) architecture, one critical design factor is where to place the AC/DC converter that converts grid AC power into HVDC that the TRU needs. This is the cornerstone of many industry discussions that have profound implications on infrastructure requirements and TRU design and Paul and Jim explore the options.

There is also a conversation around battery cost and TRU electric payback. Batteries and related power electronics account for as much as 50% or more of the cost of a BETRU. The continued downward cost is critical to Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) parity and a critical motivating factor to adopting BETRUs. Paul and Jim talk about the future development of batteries and the much-debated topic of optimal battery pack and system operating voltage.
