Thermo King to Open First of Eight CryoTech Fill Stations in Netherlands

Patented cooling technology increases efficiency, lowers maintenance and reduces environmental impact

Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, 15 June 2011 - Thermo King will open the first of eight R-744 refrigerant (carbon dioxide) supply and fill stations in the Netherlands to support companies choosing to upgrade their fleets from diesel to CryoTech, Thermo King's patented cooling technology. Thermo King, the leading manufacturer of transport temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, will open the stations in collaboration with Yara, Europe's leading R-744 supplier.


The fill stations will supply award-winning CryoTech refrigerated transport units from Thermo King. These units provide transport companies with an innovative solution that offers high efficiency, low maintenance, superior performance, best-in-class pull down and minimal environmental impact. CryoTech units use recycled R-744 refrigerant in a unique open-loop system.


The two CryoTech units that Thermo King offers - the CT-15 cryogenic trailer and the CT-10 cryogenic truck units - use recycled R-744 refrigerant to achieve a significant reduction in emissions and improved performance compared to conventional diesel powered units. The CT-10 and CT-15 units substantially exceed the demanding PIEK low-noise standard, a regulation that originated in the Netherlands and is fast becoming the accepted European standard for low-noise equipment.


The first six fill stations will be located in Apeldoorn, Zwolle, Amsterdam, Heerenveen, Waalwijk and Alkmaar. All of these fill stations are scheduled to open in 2011 with details still being finalized for the remaining two stations.


A ceremony on June 16 will launch first station
A ribbon cutting will be held to celebrate the opening of the first fill station, which will be located in Apeldoorn and run by Thermo King Transportkoeling, the Thermo King dealer for the Netherlands.


Details of the ceremony:

  • Attendees will include key leaders from Thermo King and Ingersoll Rand in Europe and from Thermo King Transportkoeling as well as numerous local officials.
  • The ribbon cutting will be at 15.00 on Thursday, June 16, at the Ecofactorij in Apeldoorn.


"Our testing has demonstrated that CryoTech allows us to reduce our carbon footprint while providing financial savings, top refrigeration performance and low noise," said Nico Kuipers, supply chain manager, Spar Netherlands. Spar Netherlands and their transportation company, Peter Appel, have already completed a successful test period using CryoTech R-744. By 2012, Spar Netherlands expects to convert 80 percent of its trailers to CryoTech refrigeration technology with 100 percent conversion anticipated by 2015.

R-744 supply and filling facilities
The new R-744 fill stations will offer Silenci high-speed refrigerant dispensers, which Yara developed in collaboration with Thermo King. The dispensers are specially designed to fill a tank in less than 10 minutes, while providing the highest levels of safety and convenience.


Because driver safety is a high priority, the patented quick connection couplings used for refilling the CryoTech units incorporate a unique pull-away safety system. This stops the R-744 refrigerant flow in the event of a driver pulling away from the dispenser with the fill hoses still attached, minimising leakage of the R-744 and injury risk.


What makes CryoTech unique
Thermo King's CryoTech units use recycled R-744 in an innovative open-loop system which provides airflow in the load space. This is essential for fresh produce. It exhausts the cryogen outside the load space, ensuring that no R-744 enters the cargo area, unlike other systems that inject liquid coolant into this space, displacing oxygen. Such systems require complex safety mechanisms and gas extraction equipment to protect operators. This inevitably delays loading and unloading while the gas is removed and the area becomes safe to enter.


CryoTech units offer a variety of benefits including:

  • Zero emissions: Units use recycled liquid R-744 captured from ammonia production in a zero-emission system. In addition to transport refrigeration, R-744 can be used in multiple applications in various industries such as food processing, manufacturing, beverage carbonation and medicine.
  • Superior performance: CryoTech units feature faster temperature recovery compared to conventional diesel driven refrigeration, making them ideal for the distribution segment.
  • Low noise: CryoTech units are significantly quieter than the PIEK standard level of 60 decibels without sacrificing performance.
  • Low maintenance: Unlike diesel-driven refrigeration units, which contain numerous high-maintenance parts like diesel engines, compressors and belts, CryoTech units reduce customer's maintenance needs due to the lower number of moving components
