Thermo King CryoTech Range Selected as One of World's Top 100 Leading Sustainable Solutions

Brussels, Belgium, June 25, 2013 - Sustainia100, the new sustainability guide launched earlier this month which identifies the world's most innovative sustainable solutions, features the Thermo King CryoTech Range as one of its top 100 selected solutions.

The Sustainia research team and advisory board selected the CryoTech range based on its positive social, economic and environmental impact on local communities. Thermo King is a manufacturer of transport temperature control solutions for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand.

From Canada to Kenya, Guatemala to the Philippines, Sustainia100 presents the 100 most innovative and impactful solutions out of more than 500 nominated projects and technologies deployed in 128 countries. The guide is designed to serve as a tool for investors, business leaders, decision makers and consumers as it provides insights to the most promising solutions at the forefront of sustainable transformation.

Thermo King engineers developed the CryoTech technology using liquid carbon dioxide (R-744) in an innovative open-loop system that provides transport refrigeration. The recycled R-744 used for cooling is a byproduct of ammonia production, which generates no new greenhouse gas emissions.

Thermo King CryoTech units achieve a significant reduction in emissions and improved performance over conventional diesel-powered units. The system offers fast temperature recovery, making it ideal for the distribution market where the cooling unit is often interrupted as drivers deliver goods at multiple locations.

In addition, the CryoTech systems are PIEK certified and an estimated 90 percent quieter than conventional diesel refrigeration units, so the units can be used for day or night-time distribution in urban areas.

“It's encouraging to see our innovative CryoTech range recognized as a sustainable solution,” said Pascal Richard, portfolio leader for air solutions, truck and trailer for Thermo King in the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa region. “With more than 600 CryoTech units in service today, we have successfully shown that this solution represents efficient, reliable and sustainable transport refrigeration for the future.”

“Congratulations to the selected 100 solutions,” said Erik Rasmussen, the founder of Sustainia. “They are true sustainability action heroes. In their fields, these solutions have proved that sustainable alternatives are available, as well as attractive, competitive and successful. Each and every solution gives us hope for a faster transformation to a sustainable future.”

Award to the Best Solution

As a selected Sustainia100 solution, the Thermo King CryoTech range also enters the field of nominees for the international sustainability award, Sustainia Award, chaired by the former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger heads the selection jury that also includes former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland; Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action; and Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair of the United Nation's climate panel and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“It is really encouraging to see that new, innovative solutions continue to emerge in all parts of the world,” said Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action. “The Sustainia100 provides all the proof we need that sustainable solutions work, that they are profitable, desirable and successful. I look forward to recognizing the best solution at this year's Sustainia Award Ceremony.”

The winner of the Sustainia Award will be announced at a ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Nov. 7, 2013, where the EU Commissioner also will recognize the best European solution.
