Revolutionary Thermo King SB-30 Series Enhancements Respond to Customer Requests for Increased Uptime and Operational Efficiency

- Exclusive solutions can reduce fuel and maintenance costs and greatly increase in-service -

Louisville, Ky., March 30, 2011 - Transport customers can immediately start gaining increased energy and operational efficiency and greater uptime with innovative enhancements to the SB-30 series from Thermo King, a manufacturer of temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand.

Customers are seeking solutions to challenges such as rising fuel costs, which has increased 20 percent in 2011 year to date according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

These enhancements respond to customer feedback requesting more solutions that help owners and operators reduce fuel spend, lower operating costs and minimize driver involvement with refrigeration units. SB-30 series units that feature these innovations include the SB-130, SB-230 and SB-330.

The upgrades include:

  • An exclusive fuel filtration system that can save the average 500-vehicle fleet owner up to $100,000 in fuel-related maintenance expenses
  • A new controller that allows data transfer via USB flash drive, allowing the average 500-vehicle fleet to gain 180 hours of in-service time annually compared to data transfer via traditional laptops and cables
  • An optional ultrasonic fuel sensor for more accurate fuel readings

Two additional upgrades slated for June 2011 introduction include:

  • A unique new evaporator blower assembly expected to lower fuel costs up to 7 percent while reducing required run time
  • Integrated wireless technology which provides options for customers to track and control their refrigerated fleets via Thermo King or third-party telematics

"Today more than ever, strong uptime and efficiency numbers are critical factors for a healthy bottom line," said Chris Casazza, president of Thermo King North America. "We built these innovative solutions around the specific needs of our customers and what th"y've told us they need to be successful."

Enhanced Fuel Filtration System - Thermo King recently introduced an exclusive and enhanced fuel filtration system on the updated SB-30 series which is expected to save the average 500-vehicle fleet $100,000 in annual fuel-related maintenance expenses. The system, which was introduced in February 2011, allows operators to enable customers to eliminate unnecessary downtime by extending the life of the primary filter, the inlet screen and the reefer engine.

The pre-filter system allows operators to run 3,000 hours between primary filter changes. This solution protects the unit from damage caused by particulates suspended in the fuel. Designed for ultra-low-sulfur fuels, the pre-filter system reduces road calls caused by poor quality fuels.

The pre-filter used in conjunction with the new 5 Micron primary fuel filter, also prevents the inlet screen from plugging to further reduce fuel-related expenses. The clear bowl on the pre-filter provides a visual indication of particulate contamination during pre-trip inspections and facilitates easy maintenance.

SR-3 Controller - The enhanced SB-30 series units introduced in February also include a new SR-3 controller that allows data transfer using a USB flash drive. The new controller allows the average 500-vehicle fleet to gain 180 additional hours of in-service time annually compared to data transfer via traditional laptops and cables. The solution comes "wireless ready," allowing field upgrades to future wireless technologies.

Ultrasonic Fuel Sensor - Upgrades to the SB-30 series also included an optional ultrasonic fuel sensor for more accurate fuel readings. The sensor, which can be installed in the fuel tank, reduces out-of-fuel shutdowns, decreases load loss claims and accurately monitors fuel consumption during staged operations.

June 2011 Introductions
Evaporation Blower System - In June, Thermo King will introduce a more efficient evaporation blower assembly for the SB-30 series. This timely and innovative solution will combat rising fuel prices by producing capacity equivalent to the current model, while using less power. The new blower is expected to reduce fuel costs by up to 7 percent and reduce required run time.

To develop the blower, Thermo King drew on the experience of Trane, another brand of Ingersoll Rand. Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort systems and services, has almost 100 years of heating, ventilation and air conditioning experience.

Integrated Wireless Technology - The SB-30 series will provide integrated options for customers to track and control their refrigerated fleets via Thermo King or third-party telematics. Available in June 2011, these integrated options will speed installation and improve reliability compared to stand-alone discrete components. This is the refrigerated transportation industry's first OEM integrated temperature management product.

TracKing is a real-time web-based asset management solution that gives customers the ability to protect their cargo and lower their fleet operating costs. TracKing uses Cellular, Satellite and GPS technology to provide temperature, location and real time alarm information.

This asset management system offers customers the ability to remotely interact with and control their units in real time from the TracKing website: The system provides these capabilities on demand from almost any location, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
