Fairway Transit Realizes Significant Fuel Savings with Thermo King's TriPac APU

Nationwide bulk commodity carrier Fairway Transit Inc. of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, has been using Thermo Kings TriPac Hybrid Auxiliary Idle Reduction and Temperature Management System since August 2006.It was a great time to start integrating APUs for us as the state of Wisconsin was offering a partial reimbursement to trucking companies willing to adopt the emission-saving technology, said Pauline Jaske, president of family-owned Fairway Transit. To qualify, we actually had to choose two different APU models. We chose Thermo Kings TriPac APU and a Knight system. Due to the performance of the TriPac APU, we have been adding them to each new, over-the-road tractor added to our fleet. The savings we've seen with the TriPac have been significant. Plus we are being proactive with up-and-coming Wisconsin anti-idling laws.

The savings Jaske refers to averages $5000 a year per TriPac-equipped tractor. When fuel was at its peak price a few years back, one drivers meticulous habits saved Fairway Transit nearly $7500. And that is definitely significant for any trucking company, especially a mid-sized fleet like Fairway Transit.

The company runs 70 units total, 39 of which are owned by Jaske including 35 tractors, 2 luggers and 2 quad axle dump trucks. Jaske runs each tractor for 4 years or 450,000 miles; 17 of the mostly Kenworth tractors are now equipped with the TriPac system. The Thermo King APU was an easy choice for us, said Jaske. The product has been extremely dependable, which our technicians love; provides the comfort our drivers appreciate; and is easy to use, which we all value. The nationwide serviceability Thermo King provides is another major factor, as well as our familiarity with the local dealer Badger Equipment & Trailer. I've worked with them for years. Another family-owned company,- Badger treats their customers and employees right, and customer service is always a priority.

Fairway Transit is a great customer partner, said Wayne Perrins, general manager at Badger Equipment & Trailer. They hold the same honest, hard-working values as we do, and we share another likeness both of our businesses are primarily matriarch-run. Building a Business; Shaping an Industry

Fairway Transit, which primarily runs throughout the Midwest Territory, hauls bulk loads such as decorative stone and scrap, recycled wood, and waste products from an ethanol production facility. The company was started in 1967 by Pauline Jaske, a registered nurse by trade, and her husband, Bud, a police officer. It became a tag-team side-job, with Pauline driving the truck for 3 years as well, a rarity in the early 1960s. I'd get frequent comments about being a female driver, and quite honestly, I never thought that one day I would be running our own trucking business of this size. I am happy to see the many women in leadership roles within our industry today.

And Pauline is very familiar with leadership roles as she has and continues to hold many impressively balancing family, business and industry participation like some might say, only a woman can. Through the years, she has raised three children all of which are working in the business today and helped build a very successful business. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association for 12 years, currently completing her 2-year term as chairperson.

Pauline is also an active member in the Women in Trucking organization, the National Association of Women in Construction, and the Association of Women in Metals Industry (AWMI).

In addition, she serves on the Board of Trustees of the local Waukesha County Technical College. This position, which Pauline has held since 2001, is the result of her leadership in establishing a truck driving program at the college.

But that's not all. Pauline has served as a County Board Supervisor since 2000, affecting county government policies and providing expertise in areas such as local highway placement. She also holds a position on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Advisory Council, where members offer insight on state truck movements, truck permit and licensing requirements and implementation, and work to resolve truck over-weight and length issues on state roads and increasingly-popular round-about road structures. Serving on these industry and government associations offers invaluable experience. The knowledge I have gained and the networking I've been able to do have been incredibly helpful for our business, said Pauline. I could never be involved as much as I am if it weren't for the support I have at Fairway Transit, which includes Bud (shop), daughter Susan (safety and drivers), son Steven (dispatching), daughter Patti (dispatch phones), daughter-in-law Valerie (Human Resources), and all of the 50+ employees at Fairway Transit.
